Israeli authorities have reinforced security operations across parts of the occupied West Bank following a shooting near the Israeli settlement of Neve Tzuf that left an Israeli man dead.
Israeli police and the military said a suspected Palestinian gunman opened fire from a vehicle at Israelis gathered near a spring close to Neve Tzuf, near Ramallah, on Sunday.
Emergency personnel attended to the victim before he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Israeli police said the suspected attacker was located several hours later at a hospital in Ramallah and arrested.
Following the shooting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed security agencies to reinforce their presence in the area and intensify arrest and security operations.
The measures included increased security activity around parts of the West Bank as Israeli forces searched for individuals suspected of involvement in the attack.
In a separate incident shortly after the shooting, Israeli forces killed a Palestinian motorist near the settlement of Ganim in the northern West Bank.
The Israeli military alleged that the motorist had attempted to drive into soldiers. No Israeli soldiers were reported injured during the incident.
The military’s account of the alleged attempted vehicle attack had not been independently verified at the time of reporting.
Authorities had also not established whether the incident near Ganim was connected to the earlier fatal shooting near Neve Tzuf.
The Palestinian group Hamas praised the Neve Tzuf shooting but did not claim responsibility for carrying it out.
The incidents occurred ahead of the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur and come amid continuing tensions across the occupied West Bank.
Violence in the territory has intensified in recent years, involving Palestinian attacks on Israelis, Israeli military raids and increased attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.
Israeli authorities have said the latest security measures are aimed at preventing further attacks and apprehending suspects, as security operations continue across parts of the West Bank.
