Britain’s King Charles III has urged some of the world’s leading artificial intelligence executives to strengthen safeguards around AI development, citing concerns about the potential risks if increasingly powerful systems are misused.
The monarch delivered the remarks on Thursday during a meeting with leaders from the AI industry, government and other sectors at Dumfries House in Cumnock, Scotland.
Executives from major technology companies, including Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic, were among those addressed by the King.
Charles said concerns were increasingly being raised by some of the people developing advanced AI systems about the potential for the technology to acquire dangerous capabilities or be deliberately misused.
He warned that the rapid pace of development made it necessary to consider safeguards before risks became more difficult to control.
“Those who have created these technologies are now increasingly warning that AI risks developing darker capacities,” the King said.
KING URGES AI LEADERS TO PUT HUMANITY FIRST
Charles told technology leaders that their responsibility should extend beyond advancing the capabilities of artificial intelligence.
“The task before you is not merely to advance technology, but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world,” he said.
He stressed the urgency of considering how increasingly capable AI systems could be prevented from falling into the wrong hands or being deployed in potentially catastrophic ways.
The warning comes as governments and technology companies worldwide grapple with how to regulate increasingly advanced AI while preserving its potential benefits in healthcare, science, education, business and other sectors.
Charles called on those developing and deploying the technology to ensure adequate safeguards remain central to its advancement.
