Lecturers at the University of Port Harcourt have begun an indefinite strike, shutting down lectures, examinations and other academic duties over alleged shortfalls in three months’ salaries and unpaid responsibility allowances.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNIPORT branch, declared the strike after a 48-working-hour ultimatum to the university management expired without resolution of the disputed payments.
UNIPORT ASUU Secretary, Tarila Amakoromo, announced the industrial action in a statement on Thursday, saying the decision was reached at an emergency congress held on Wednesday, September 16.
According to the union, lecturers received incomplete salaries for June, July and August 2026, while some responsibility allowances were also not fully paid.
ASUU further alleged that lecturers in the School of Health Sciences under the CONMESS and CONHESS salary structures had not received responsibility allowances.
The union also claimed that its members had been excluded from monthly responsibility allowance payments made to members of other unions for more than two years.
ASUU ORDERS TOTAL WITHDRAWAL FROM ACADEMIC DUTIES
The union said its emergency congress on September 11 gave the university administration 48 working hours, ending at midnight on September 15, to resolve the outstanding issues.
According to ASUU, representatives of the university administration met with the union on the same day the ultimatum was issued and promised to respond before the deadline.
The union, however, said the issues remained unresolved when the deadline expired, prompting members to declare an indefinite strike at another emergency congress on September 16.
Under the strike directive, ASUU members are not expected to conduct lectures, administer or invigilate examinations, participate in statutory meetings or undertake other official assignments.
A strike monitoring team has also been constituted to monitor compliance across the university’s campuses and centres.
The union said the industrial action would continue until its grievances over salaries and allowances were addressed.
The university management’s response to the strike declaration was not contained in the union’s statement.
