A Nigerian man, Ayodele Jamgbadi, is facing a murder allegation in the United Kingdom after a 61-year-old railway worker died following an alleged assault at Ilford Station in east London.
Jamgbadi is accused of punching railway employee Jorge Ortega after becoming agitated when he missed a train on the Elizabeth line.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 8:45pm on December 4, 2024, as Jamgbadi attempted to travel from Ilford to Stratford.
The Inner London Crown Court heard that Jamgbadi allegedly reacted angrily after missing the train and began kicking an advertising frame at the station.
Three railway workers, including Ortega, subsequently approached him and attempted to calm him down, the court was told.
Prosecutor Patrick Dennis said CCTV footage captured the incident and showed Ortega moving backwards while trying to deal with the situation.
According to the prosecution, Jamgbadi then allegedly punched Ortega in the face, causing him to fall and strike his head on the station platform.
Ortega was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries 48 hours later, on December 6, 2024.
The court was told that Jamgbadi was arrested following the incident.
Prosecutors further alleged that, after his arrest, Jamgbadi admitted to British Transport Police officers that he had punched Ortega.
He was reportedly quoted as saying: “I punched him in the face, I literally punched him in the face.”
Jamgbadi allegedly went on to ask the officers what they intended to do about the incident.
He was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm. Following Ortega’s death, the charge was subsequently upgraded to murder.
However, the court heard that Jamgbadi, who resides on Kingston Road in Ilford, is considered unfit to plead or stand trial because of his mental health condition and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
As a result, Judge Benedict Kelleher directed the jury to determine whether Jamgbadi carried out the act that caused Ortega’s death, rather than requiring him to enter a plea in the usual manner.
The case remains before the court, and the allegations against Jamgbadi have yet to be determined by a criminal conviction.
