Russia has launched a fresh wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing two people and injuring several others after a brief pause in air strikes during the visit of United States peace negotiators.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the overnight attacks triggered fires across parts of the city and left at least 10 people injured. Emergency services responded to multiple locations affected by the strikes.

The assault came shortly after the departure of US envoys who had visited Kyiv as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at exploring ways to end the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials said the attack involved a combination of missiles and drones, causing damage to residential and non-residential buildings, including schools, clinics, warehouses and other facilities in several areas of the capital.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the strikes targeted military and logistics facilities in Kyiv and surrounding areas, while Ukrainian authorities described the attack as another major assault on the capital.

The renewed strikes have raised further concerns over the prospects of diplomatic progress as international efforts continue to seek a resolution to the war, which has lasted for more than four years.

The latest attack also prompted neighbouring countries to increase security measures, with Poland activating preventive military operations in response to possible threats from Russian missile activity.
