A 43-year-old Nigerian-British businessman and social media influencer, Igho Ubiribo, has died following complications from a penis enlargement procedure he underwent during a holiday in Thailand.
Ubiribo reportedly died in March after receiving 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine at a clinic in Bangkok, according to evidence presented at an inquest at Inner West London Coroners’ Court.
The Daily Mail reported that Ubiribo developed chest pain and twice lost consciousness while receiving a massage with his wife, Danielle Simba Allen, shortly after the procedure.
He was subsequently taken to Sukhumvit Hospital by ambulance, where doctors diagnosed him with a pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal condition caused by a blood clot blocking an artery in the lungs.
Ubiribo reportedly lost consciousness again before doctors could conduct a recommended CT scan.
Medical personnel attempted to revive him for more than 100 minutes, but he died in the early hours of March 6.
A postmortem examination carried out in the United Kingdom found cellular material in his lungs that matched the hyaluronic acid used during the penile filler procedure.
The finding supported the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism linked to the injection.
Coroner Jean Harkin subsequently ruled that Ubiribo died “as the result of a cosmetic procedure abroad”, with the official cause of death recorded as a pulmonary embolism resulting from the injection of hyaluronic acid into his penis.
Ubiribo, who had about 185,000 followers on Instagram, was buried in London in May, the Daily Mail reported.
Nigerian music star Davido and other notable personalities attended his funeral.
Medical concerns
The case has renewed concerns among medical professionals over the potential dangers associated with penile filler procedures.
Professor Vaibhav Modgil, an NHS andrology specialist and consultant urological surgeon, reportedly warned that complications from such procedures could have devastating consequences for patients.
