Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has commissioned 20 additional electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle Scheme, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to modernising public transportation and promoting environmentally sustainable mobility.
The buses were inaugurated at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, fulfilling the Governor’s pledge to expand the fleet after the first batch of 20 electric buses was launched in December 2025.
Governor Otti described transportation as a critical driver of economic growth, saying the adoption of electric vehicles would reduce operational costs, cut carbon emissions and support the state’s vision of building a modern, inclusive and greener economy.
He noted that the newly commissioned buses feature larger cargo compartments and accessibility facilities for persons with disabilities, aimed at promoting inclusive and convenient public transportation.
The Governor also announced stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, warning that the government would maintain zero tolerance for reckless driving, traffic light violations and vehicle overloading.
As part of the measures, he said the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA) and the Harmonised Task Force would extend their operations until 10 p.m. daily, including weekends, to improve road safety and protect lives and property.
Governor Otti commended the state’s Interagency Transport Team for its role in implementing the transport initiative and assured residents that acts of vandalism or sabotage against government transport assets would be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
He also urged citizens to fulfil their tax obligations, stressing that increased revenue would enable the government to sustain investments in infrastructure and improve public services across the state.
