Not fewer than 17 people have been killed in renewed attacks between Russia and Ukraine as the war, now in its fifth year, continues to intensify with no immediate signs of a breakthrough.
Russian officials said 14 people were killed in separate incidents, while Ukrainian authorities reported three deaths following Russian strikes.
In Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said six people, including three children, were killed and nearly 40 others injured after debris from a Ukrainian drone fell on the resort settlement of Arkhipo-Osipovka near Gelendzhik on Monday.
In Crimea, the Moscow-installed head of the occupied peninsula, Sergey Aksyonov, said the death toll had risen to four, with two others injured.
Acting Belgorod Governor Alexander Shuvaev also reported four civilian deaths and 17 injuries following attacks on settlements in the region bordering Ukraine.
In Ukraine, three people, including an emergency response worker and his eight-year-old son, were killed when a Russian strike hit a petrol station in the Kryvyi Rih district of Dnipropetrovsk region.
Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said the attack triggered a fire that damaged the petrol station and several vehicles.
Civilian casualties have increased in recent months as both sides intensify their attacks, although Moscow and Kyiv continue to deny deliberately targeting civilians.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed on Monday that its forces had captured the settlements of Bilyi Kolodiaz and Uspenivka in Ukraine’s eastern Kharkiv region.
Ukraine also carried out a fresh drone attack inside Russia, with a drone striking a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, a major Russian e-commerce company, in the village of Khryastovo in Vladimir region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Wildberries of supporting Russia’s war effort. Ukrainian officials and independent investigators have alleged that the company sells dual-use items, including protective equipment and fibre-optic cables that can be used in drone operations.
The latest escalation comes days after Zelenskyy met US President Donald Trump at the White House as Kyiv seeks greater American support for its air defence capabilities.
Zelenskyy subsequently discussed Ukraine’s air defence needs with US Vice President JD Vance during a phone call on Friday.
However, Trump has since appeared to retreat from an earlier commitment to grant Ukraine a licence to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles, raising fresh uncertainty over the extent of future US military support for Kyiv.
