No fewer than 10 people have lost their lives, while six others sustained injuries in a fatal road accident along the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway in Ogun State.

The crash occurred on Sunday night at Sapade Bridge and involved a Dangote Sinotruk truck and a Toyota Hiace commercial bus, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

In a statement issued by the Ogun State Sector Command’s Public Education Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Afolabi Odunsi, the accident happened at about 8:05 p.m.

The FRSC said 18 people were involved in the collision, comprising 15 adult males, two adult females and one male child.

Of the victims, 10 including nine adult males and one male child died, while six others suffered varying degrees of injuries. Two adult males escaped unhurt.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attributed the crash to excessive speed, dangerous driving and wrongful overtaking.

The agency disclosed that the truck driver allegedly attempted to reverse on the highway after missing his route, creating an obstruction for oncoming vehicles. The approaching commercial bus, travelling at high speed, reportedly crashed into the truck while trying to manoeuvre through the limited space.

Rescue officials evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital in Ogere for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary in Ipara.

The damaged vehicles have been handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, pending further investigation and evacuation from the accident scene.

Reacting to the tragedy, Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He urged motorists, particularly commercial drivers and truck operators, to avoid reversing on highways, speeding and other dangerous driving practices that endanger lives.

Ogunjobi also advised drivers who miss their routes to use designated turning points instead of carrying out risky manoeuvres on expressways, stressing that strict compliance with traffic regulations remains essential to reducing road crashes and preventing avoidable loss of lives.
