POLICE FOIL ALLEGED PALACE ATTACK, ARREST ARMED SUSPECT IN AKWA IBOM

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man, identified as Bassey Udo Idiong, for allegedly storming a palace with a locally made pistol in Essien Udim Local Government Area.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the suspect was arrested on July 1, 2026, following a distress call reporting that he had threatened to shoot a palace occupant.

She said police operatives responded promptly to the report, disarmed the suspect without incident, and recovered the locally manufactured pistol.

The command noted that the swift intervention prevented a potential tragedy and reaffirmed its commitment to tackling criminal activities through intelligence-led policing.

DSP John disclosed that the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue to determine the source of the firearm, establish the motive behind the incident, and identify any possible accomplices. She added that he would be charged in court after investigations are concluded.

Commending the officers for their professionalism, Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare reiterated the command’s resolve to rid the state of illegal firearms and violent criminals.

He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to the police, assuring them that all reports would be handled confidentially, while warning criminal elements that there would be no hiding place for anyone seeking to disrupt the peace in Akwa Ibom State.
