The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, says the ongoing expansion of the Nigerian Army through increased recruitment and the establishment of new formations will strengthen its operational capacity and improve responses to the country’s security challenges.

Speaking during the interdenominational church service marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) in Abuja, the COAS, represented by the Commander, Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General W.N. Dangana, said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to tackle insecurity across the country.

He said the Army has significantly increased recruitment as directed by President Bola Tinubu and is committed to ensuring that newly enlisted personnel receive adequate training, proper equipment and professional development.

Lieutenant General Shaibu noted that troops remain actively engaged in operations against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other criminal activities, adding that the Army has recorded notable successes through the neutralisation of criminal elements, dismantling of terrorist camps and rescue of hostages.

The Army Chief also reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of personnel under the Army’s “Soldier First” philosophy, highlighting ongoing investments in accommodation, healthcare, training, education and other welfare programmes.

He described this year’s Nigerian Army Day Celebration theme, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” as a reminder of the military’s constitutional responsibility to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty while protecting the lives and welfare of its citizens.

The COAS also paid tribute to fallen soldiers, wounded personnel, veterans and military families for their sacrifices and continued support to the Nigerian Army.
