At least 17 farmers have been killed and several others injured following a deadly attack by suspected bandits in Goran Namaye village, located in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to residents, the incident occurred on Friday while farmers were tending to their fields during the ongoing planting season.

A community member, Ibrahim Mohammed, said the attackers had previously issued threats warning residents against returning to their farms. Despite the warning, some farmers reportedly continued their agricultural activities, prompting the armed men to carry out the attack.

Mohammed explained that a large number of gunmen stormed the farmlands and opened fire on the farmers, resulting in multiple casualties. He said 17 people were killed during the assault, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity.

The deceased were later buried in a mass funeral, while the injured victims were taken to a medical facility in Talata Mafara for treatment.

Reacting to the incident, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Maharazu Salisu, condemned the killings and called for urgent intervention by both the federal and state governments to address the worsening security situation in the area.

Salisu warned that persistent attacks on farming communities could severely disrupt agricultural activities and further deepen food insecurity in the state and beyond.

According to the lawmaker, many residents now live in fear due to the increasing presence of armed groups across several communities. He also raised concerns about cases of abduction in neighbouring areas, alleging that some victims remain in captivity despite attempts at dialogue and reconciliation.

He urged security agencies to intensify operations against criminal elements and ensure that farmers can safely return to their fields without fear of violence.
