The Senate has approved a three-month extension for the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, shifting the deadline from June 30 to September 30, 2026, to allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to complete ongoing projects and maximise utilisation of released funds.

The decision followed a motion sponsored by Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno, and was adopted after lawmakers suspended relevant rules to fast-track consideration of the request.

Leading debate, Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, said the extension became necessary due to delays in procurement processes, project execution challenges and administrative bottlenecks that had slowed implementation despite substantial fund releases.

He warned that without the extension, several ongoing capital projects risk abandonment, wastage of public resources and disruption of government interventions across key sectors.

Following deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the motion to a voice vote, which was unanimously adopted.

The extension applies strictly to capital projects under the 2025 budget and will take effect upon concurrence by the House of Representatives.
