Portugal secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly on Wednesday night, with Francisco Conceição’s spectacular second-half strike proving decisive in an entertaining contest at Leiria.

The match, which served as Portugal’s final warm-up ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saw both sides produce an engaging display, with Nigeria matching the European side for long spells before a moment of individual brilliance settled the encounter.

Pedro Neto gave Portugal the lead in the first half, but Nigeria responded through Akor Adams, who continued his fine scoring form for the Super Eagles to level the match before the break.

The hosts started brightly in front of their home supporters at the Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo and playmaker Bruno Fernandes orchestrating early attacking moves.

Portugal’s pressure paid off in the 23rd minute when Neto finished clinically to hand the hosts the advantage.

Despite going behind, Nigeria grew into the game and threatened repeatedly on the counterattack, with Eric Chelle’s side exploiting gaps behind the Portuguese defence.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 38th minute when Akor Adams held off a challenge from captain Rúben Dias before linking up neatly in attack and calmly slotting past the goalkeeper to restore parity. The strike marked his sixth international goal for Nigeria.

The Super Eagles finished the first half strongly, arguably creating the better chances in transition, as both teams went into the break level at 1-1.

After the restart, Portugal introduced several key players, including Bernardo Silva, João Cancelo, João Félix, Rúben Neves and Nuno Mendes, which immediately increased their intensity.

Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was called into action multiple times, producing important saves to deny Portugal, including a fine stop to keep out Félix, who also struck the crossbar shortly after coming on.

Cristiano Ronaldo had his own chances but was unable to find the net before being substituted in the 64th minute to applause from the home crowd.

As the game appeared to be heading towards a draw, Conceição delivered the decisive moment in the 75th minute.

Picking up possession on the right side of the Nigerian penalty area, he cut inside onto his left foot and unleashed a powerful curling strike into the far corner, beyond Okoye’s reach.

Nigeria pushed for a late equaliser but found it difficult to break down Portugal’s organised defence in the closing stages, as the hosts managed possession effectively to see out the game.

Despite the defeat, the Super Eagles showed encouraging signs, with several players delivering strong individual performances as coach Eric Chelle continues to refine his squad ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures, including Africa Cup of Nations qualifying preparations.
