Suspected armed bandits have launched a pre-dawn assault on a Nigerian Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mandaragira, Borno State, leaving five soldiers and three members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) dead, according to military authorities.

The attack, which occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Friday, also left several personnel injured, with wounded victims evacuated by air for urgent medical treatment.

Military officials said the attackers also made away with unspecified operational equipment used in ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the region.

The incident was confirmed in a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Haruna M. Sani, Acting Media Information Officer at the Headquarters of Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI.

According to the statement, troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Mandaragira, under the 25 Brigade in Sector 2, came under heavy attack but mounted a defensive response.

Authorities said security forces succeeded in neutralising several of the attackers during the confrontation, though the exact number was not disclosed.

The military said additional troops and combat support units have been deployed to the area as part of efforts to stabilise the region and prevent further attacks.

Officials added that troops remain in control of the base and are conducting follow-up operations aimed at tracking down fleeing assailants and consolidating security gains.

“Troops remain firmly in control of the FOB and continue to dominate the general area,” the statement read, noting that exploitation operations were ongoing.

The latest attack highlights the continuing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where military forces and allied civilian defence groups such as the CJTF remain engaged in long-running counterinsurgency operations.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to maintain pressure on insurgent groups operating in the region, even as sporadic attacks on military and civilian targets persist.
