The Nigeria Customs Service has initiated disciplinary proceedings against an officer accused of demanding ₦200,000 from a motorist along the Lagos-Benin Expressway.

The incident came to public attention after a video of the encounter surfaced online on Friday. The footage, reportedly recorded secretly by the motorist using AI-enabled Meta glasses, showed a patrol officer questioning the driver over vehicle documents and alleged unpaid clearance fees dating back to 2018.

According to the video, the officer claimed the payments had accumulated over the years and directed the motorist to report to the office to retrieve his vehicle key. When the driver asked how the issue could be resolved, the officer allegedly responded by demanding ₦200,000.

Reacting to the development, the Nigeria Customs Service said it had activated immediate disciplinary procedures in line with its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and professional misconduct.

Speaking on behalf of the Comptroller of the Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Comptroller G.I. Aliu, Customs Superintendent Hussaini Abdullahu stated that officers found guilty of violating ethical standards would face sanctions without compromise.

The Service also confirmed that the officer involved had been handed over to the Head of the Customs Police Unit, Zone A, for further investigation and possible disciplinary action.

According to the NCS, the Customs Police Unit has assured the public that a thorough inquiry will be conducted into the incident.

Although the identity of the officer has not been officially disclosed, the case has generated fresh public scrutiny over accountability and conduct within law enforcement and border enforcement agencies.

The Customs Service reiterated its commitment to professionalism and urged members of the public to continue reporting acts of misconduct involving its personnel.
