Akwa Ibom State Police Command has averted a potential security breach at the Nigerian Correctional Service Custodial Centre in Ikot Ekpene following the recovery of explosive materials near the facility.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the operation was carried out on April 27, 2026, after correctional authorities alerted the police to suspicious items discovered around the custodial centre.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, subsequently deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit alongside other tactical teams to secure the area.

A coordinated search led to the recovery of two 90mm high-explosive rounds and other items, including a length of burning fuse, tools, and metal objects.
According to the police, the EOD team successfully neutralised the explosive devices, preventing any threat to lives and critical infrastructure.
The command said security has since been reinforced around the facility, with increased surveillance, access control, and patrols to forestall further threats.
It added that investigations and technical analysis are ongoing to determine the source of the explosives and apprehend those responsible.
The Commissioner of Police assured residents that the situation is under control and confirmed that no casualties were recorded.

He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, warning that the command would not tolerate attempts to compromise public safety or target critical institutions.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
