Former President Goodluck Jonathan has commended the enduring legacy of West African diplomacy during the annual award ceremony of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN), held in Abuja.
Speaking during the event, Jonathan described the occasion as a significant moment of reflection on the visionary leadership that laid the foundation for regional cooperation in West Africa.
The ceremony honoured distinguished statesmen whose foresight and diplomatic commitment were instrumental in the establishment of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Among those recognised was former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, who received accolades for his pivotal role in fostering unity and advancing the creation of the regional bloc. Jonathan congratulated Gowon, noting that his statesmanship continues to inspire generations of leaders across the sub-region.
The event also paid a solemn posthumous tribute to Gnassingbé Eyadéma, acknowledging his contributions as one of the architects of regional integration in West Africa. His legacy, speakers noted, remains deeply embedded in the continued pursuit of economic cooperation and political stability within the region.
Jonathan further praised ARCAN for its commitment to preserving Nigeria’s diplomatic heritage. He urged members of the association to sustain their efforts in promoting regional peace, cooperation, and development.
“The responsibility to strengthen our sub-region rests on a continued dedication to service, unity, and shared prosperity,” Jonathan said.
The ARCAN annual event continues to serve as a platform for recognising excellence in diplomacy and reinforcing the importance of collaboration among West African nations.
