Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on a military formation in Benisheikh, Borno State.

According to a statement issued by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Thursday, the attack targeted the Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade at about 12:30 a.m. on April 9, 2026.

The statement, signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, said insurgents attempted to breach the perimeter of the base but were met with strong resistance from troops.

“The troops, led by the Commander 29 Brigade, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, responded with exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” the statement read.

It added that the attackers were decisively engaged and forced to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission.

The DHQ described the attack as a sign of desperation by terrorist elements who have suffered significant setbacks in recent military operations across the North-East.

Despite the successful defence, the military confirmed that some soldiers were killed during the encounter.

“The encounter resulted in the loss of a few brave and gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” the statement noted.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, paid tribute to the fallen troops, describing their sacrifice as a source of pride and inspiration to the nation.

The military authorities also urged the public and media to allow time for the notification of next of kin before further details are released, while cautioning against the spread of unverified information.

Meanwhile, clearance operations are ongoing in the area to track and neutralise fleeing insurgents and prevent them from regrouping.

The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to the fight against terrorism, assuring citizens of continued efforts to ensure security and stability across the country.
