The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify allegations that some of its senior officials received land and cash gifts from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.
In a press statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the party expressed concern over media reports linking the FCT Minister to alleged gifts to top officials of the electoral body, describing the development as “disturbing and worrisome.”
The PDP noted that a supervising National Commissioner for the FCT, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, was reportedly quoted as admitting to receiving land, raising further concerns about what it described as a possible “land-for-favour” arrangement.
According to the party, such allegations risk undermining public confidence in INEC, particularly given its central role in managing Nigeria’s electoral process.
“It is curious that these land gifts are allegedly being given to officials in agencies critical to elections, while other essential sectors such as healthcare, education, and security have not benefited from similar gestures,” the statement said.
The opposition party urged the INEC Chairman to publicly address the allegations, noting that his name had also been mentioned in reports as a possible beneficiary.
“These stories, at a time like this, deepen the erosion of public trust in an electoral umpire with a legacy of stained credibility,” Ememobong stated.
The PDP stressed the need for transparency, urging the commission to urgently inform Nigerians of the true situation surrounding the matter.
“The Commission must, at all times, strive to be above board and ensure that transparency and impartiality are not just proclaimed but clearly reflected in its actions,” the statement added.
The call comes amid growing public scrutiny over the relationship between political office holders and key electoral institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
