United States President, Donald Trump has said that the recent US-Israel war with Iran has effectively resulted in a “regime change,” even as he expressed optimism about reaching a diplomatic agreement with Tehran.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump suggested that the leadership dynamics in Iran had fundamentally shifted following the month-long conflict.

“I think we’ll make a deal with them, pretty sure… but we’ve had regime change,” he said, pointing to the reported deaths of key Iranian leaders during the war.

According to him, the emergence of a new leadership structure in Iran signals a departure from the past. “We’re dealing with different people than anybody’s dealt with before. It’s a whole different group of people. So I would consider that regime change,” Trump added.

The conflict, which began on February 28 with coordinated US-Israeli strikes, has significantly altered the geopolitical landscape in the Middle East. Mojtaba Khamenei, son of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in an airstrike at the onset of hostilities, has since been named Iran’s new supreme leader—becoming the third since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The war has also had far-reaching economic implications, particularly following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz—a critical global shipping route through which about 20 per cent of the world’s oil and gas supply passes. The disruption triggered a surge in global oil prices and heightened concerns over energy security.

However, Trump indicated that tensions may be easing, revealing that Iran had allowed oil shipments to resume through the strategic waterway.

“They gave us 20 boats of oil, big, big boats of oil going through the Hormuz Strait,” he said, adding that the shipments were expected to commence immediately and continue over the coming days.

The development signals a potential de-escalation in hostilities, even as global attention remains fixed on whether ongoing engagements could lead to a broader agreement between both sides.
