Operatives of the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested three persons suspected to be involved in illegal gold mining activities in Borno State.
The anti-graft agency said the suspects Umar Muhammad, Modu Bamai Umar, and Sani Samaila were apprehended in Mallam Jakwa Town, Hawul Local Government Area, following credible intelligence on their alleged involvement in unlawful mining operations.
According to the EFCC, items recovered from the suspects at the time of arrest included a small gold-measuring device and quantities of mined gold.
The Commission expressed concern that illegal mining activities in parts of the state were contributing to environmental degradation and worsening security challenges.
The EFCC added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
