Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has approved the donation of an official vehicle to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, in a move aimed at strengthening collaboration with media practitioners.
The Governor announced the donation on Thursday during a special Iftar held at the Government House, which brought together journalists, social media influencers, and top government officials to foster dialogue on governance and information dissemination.
Speaking at the event, the NUJ Chairman in the state, Usman Binji, commended the governor’s performance, describing his administration as focused and people-oriented.
He highlighted achievements in key sectors such as education, healthcare, security, and rural development, citing projects like the construction of markets in Bodinga as evidence of economic foresight and inclusive growth.
Binji also praised the prompt payment of salaries, describing it as critical to economic stability and a model for other states to emulate.
While appreciating the government’s efforts, he appealed for further support, including the rehabilitation of the NUJ Press Centre and the inclusion of NUJ leadership in relevant government committees.
Responding, Governor Aliyu emphasised the importance of the media in sustaining democracy, transparency, and accountability.
“The media remains a vital partner in governance. Your role in promoting transparency and holding leaders accountable cannot be overemphasised,” he said.
Announcing the vehicle donation, the governor noted that it would enhance the union’s operational efficiency, while assuring that other requests would be addressed through due process.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to press freedom and responsible engagement with both traditional and digital media platforms.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Sokoto State Social Media Organisation, Abdullahi Hashimu, stressed the growing influence of digital platforms and called for sustained government engagement with online stakeholders.
The event featured the presentation of an Award of Appreciation to Governor Aliyu by the NUJ, alongside prayers for peace, unity, and continued development in the state.
