The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a wanted kidnap suspect, Abdullahi Lawal, believed to be the ring leader of a notorious gang responsible for kidnapping activities in the Akoko axis of the state.

Lawal was apprehended in Ikare-Akoko, Akoko North-East Local Government Area, following months of intelligence gathering and coordinated security operations.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure, the state capital.

According to the statement, the suspect was identified as the mastermind behind the kidnapping of one Aremu Tijani, which occurred on August 18, 2025, at the victim’s bush farm in the Ikare-Akoko area.

Jimoh explained that during an earlier tactical operation carried out by security operatives to rescue the victim and dismantle the gang, three members of the kidnapping syndicate were neutralised, while four others were arrested.

However, the alleged gang leader, Lawal, managed to escape during the encounter despite sustaining gunshot injuries while exchanging fire with police operatives.

“Following his escape, the command immediately placed the suspect on an intelligence watchlist, while intensive surveillance and discreet investigations were launched to track his movements and possible hideouts,” the police spokesperson stated.

He noted that after months of sustained intelligence-led operations and coordinated efforts by security personnel, the suspect was eventually tracked and arrested by police operatives in Ikare-Akoko.

Jimoh added that the suspect had made useful confessional statements to the police and would soon be charged in court.

Reiterating the command’s zero tolerance for kidnapping and other violent crimes, the spokesperson assured residents that the police were intensifying efforts to dismantle all criminal networks operating within Ondo State and neighbouring communities.

He also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, commended the dedication, professionalism, and resilience of the officers involved in the operation.

The police boss further appreciated members of the public who had continued to provide timely and credible information that supports security operations in the state.

Jimoh urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through established security channels.

“The command assures the public that no criminal will be allowed to operate freely in Ondo State, as proactive measures remain in place to safeguard lives and property,” the statement added.
