The Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, says the administration of Governor Umo Eno has allocated 40 per cent of political appointments to women, surpassing the 35 per cent benchmark recommended by the 1995 Beijing Conference.
Eyakenyi made the disclosure on Sunday during a thanksgiving service at the Apostolic Church, Uyo, to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day and the successful completion of a women’s civic sensitization tour across the 31 local government areas of the state.
She described the development as unprecedented in the political history of Akwa Ibom, noting that women now occupy key leadership positions including deputy Governor, chief judge, head of service, commissioners and local government officials.
Highlighting the theme of the 2026 celebration, “Rights, Justice and Action,” Eyakenyi urged women to mentor younger generations and uphold moral values in society.
She also commended Governor Eno for policies promoting women’s empowerment, security and the fight against gender-based violence, adding that provisions have been made in the 2026 budget to support women through cooperative societies across the state.
“When you empower a woman, you empower a whole community,” she said.
