Justice D.I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, convicted and sentenced two individuals for their involvement in sextortion and related cyber offences.
The convicts, Ademola Joshua Oluwadamilare and Dolapo Adisa, were prosecuted by the Lagos Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a nine-count charge bordering on cyber-stalking, obtaining under false pretence, and money laundering.
According to the EFCC, the defendants engaged in online schemes in which they allegedly deceived victims through social media platforms, obtained sensitive materials from them, and subsequently used the information to demand money. The acts were said to constitute sextortion, a growing form of cybercrime where perpetrators exploit victims through threats of releasing private or compromising information.
During the proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence linking the defendants to the offences, after which the court found them guilty as charged.
Justice Dipeolu subsequently sentenced the convicts to various terms of imprisonment, issued orders in line with the provisions of the law regarding the offences.
The EFCC has repeatedly warned members of the public, particularly young people and social media users, to exercise caution in their online interactions and avoid sharing sensitive personal information with strangers on digital platforms.
The commission also reiterated its commitment to intensifying the fight against cybercrime and ensuring that individuals involved in internet-related fraud and exploitation are brought to justice.
