The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has condemned escalating violence in war-torn Sudan, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan states, called for an immediate end to hostilities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council expressed deep concern over repeated drone attacks targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure and humanitarian workers, including strikes affecting operations of the World Food Programme (WFP).
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been engaged in a protracted conflict with the government-aligned Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since April 2023, has been accused of intensifying attacks on civilian populations.
According to reports cited by the council, at least 28 people were killed, 39 others injured, including women, during a recent raid in North Darfur State. The council also decried continued violence and instability in the Kordofan region.
Council members condemned arbitrary detentions and conflict-related sexual violence, warning that such acts may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity under international law.
The UNSC further imposed sanctions on four senior RSF officials, including a relative of RSF leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The measures include travel bans and asset freezes.
The council reiterated the need for safe and unhindered humanitarian access across affected areas, stressing that starvation must not be used as a weapon of war.
The conflict, now in its third year, has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions, creating what the United Nations describes as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
