Abia State Government has approved a partnership with U.S.-based Medical Foundation to train health workers across all categories in the state.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

The collaboration is aimed at enabling health workers to adopt best practices in healthcare delivery.

“The governor has approved the collaboration between the State Ministry of Health and the U.S.-based healthcare consultancy outfit to ensure a healthcare culture change in the state.

This is aimed at training health workers to embrace best practices in healthcare delivery,” Kanu said.

He added that the Ministry of Health is set to operationalize 53 fully equipped Primary Healthcare Centres under the “Project Ekwueme” initiative, which is expected to strengthen primary healthcare across the state.

Kanu also revealed that the Abia State Q2 Health Pilot Project has commenced at selected hospitals and PHCs to improve healthcare delivery further.

Highlighting the state’s growing recognition in healthcare, he noted that the Paediatric Association of Nigeria has scheduled its next Annual General Meeting in Abia State in 2027, reflecting the success of the Governor’s health sector reforms.

On public health campaigns, Kanu said the recently concluded Measles and Rubella vaccination campaign, flagged off on February 3, 2026, achieved 96 per cent coverage, surpassing the 95 per cent target.

The campaign reached schools and social institutions, with over 8,000 groups involved.

The commissioner also announced that Governor Otti would flag off the construction of the Enyimba International Hotel in Aba and the Ukwa East General Hospital in Ohanku, projects described as milestones in urban renewal, infrastructure, and healthcare development.

Speaking on the QANTUS partnership, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, explained that the initiative is designed to ensure healthcare workers adopt the right skills and behaviours for improved service delivery.

“These experts train doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other health workers to adopt a culture change that enables them to offer the best services to the people,” he said.
