Inibehe Effiong, a lawyer and human rights activist, has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, for his alleged involvement in the ongoing Area Council elections in Abuja.
In a statement on Saturday, Inibehe argued that Wike is not a registered voter in Abuja, noting that his voter registration is in Rivers State.
He said, therefore, it is not the minister’s responsibility to supervise the elections in the FCT, which he described as the exclusive mandate of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“Assuming, for argument’s sake, that Wike is acting as an agent of a political party, whether the APC or the PDP, he cannot be a universal agent. He can only be the agent of a particular polling unit or a particular collation centre. Effiong said.
The human rights activist also accused Wike of partisanship, highlighting what he described as a contradiction between the minister’s earlier enforcement of movement restrictions in Abuja and his current unrestricted movement around the city.
“This is insane,” Effiong remarked, questioning the minister’s neutrality and role during the elections.
The FCT Area Council elections are ongoing across six councils, with INEC and security agencies deployed to monitor the polls and maintain order.
