Barbados’ Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley, on Thursday clinched her third term in office as her Barbados Labour Party (BLP) won all 30 seats in the island nation’s House of Assembly, state broadcaster CBC Barbados reported.
The sweeping victory unseated opposition leader Ralph Thorne, cementing Mottley’s position as one of the most prominent Caribbean leaders on the global stage.
Speaking to jubilant supporters clad in red, Mottley said her government’s primary mission was to fight poverty and tackle injustice while creating opportunities for all Barbadians. She also announced that Friday would be observed as a public bank holiday in celebration of the win.
The 60-year-old leader further promised to safeguard Barbados’ democracy, which last year marked 75 years since universal suffrage was granted.
Mottley’s BLP has pledged to continue prioritising economic growth, cost-of-living issues, and strengthening Barbados’ influence on the international scene.
The opposition Democratic Labour Party, through Ralph Thorne, described the outcome as disappointing but thanked supporters for a clean and peaceful campaign. Thorne had earlier criticised the government on matters of security and infrastructure, urging policy attention on domestic priorities.
Barbados, the easternmost country in the Caribbean, is home to around 283,000 people, covers slightly more than half the size of Singapore.
