Egypt’s House of Representatives has approved a cabinet reshuffle proposed by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, bringing in 13 new ministers to address the country’s struggling economy.
Key appointments include Ahmed Rostom, a World Bank economist, as Minister of Planning, and Mohamed Farid Saleh, chair of the Financial Regulatory Authority, as Minister of Investment. The reshuffle also restores the State Ministry of Information, with Diaa Rashwan named minister.
Two women Ministers were appointed: Randa al-Menshawi heads Housing, while Gihane Zaki takes charge of Culture. The position of Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs was also created.
Portfolios for foreign affairs and defence remain unchanged. The government faces challenges including the aftermath of IMF-imposed austerity, the COVID-19 pandemic, disruptions from the Russia-Ukraine war, and reduced Suez Canal revenues due to Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.
The new cabinet is expected to be sworn in on Wednesday, February 11.
