No fewer than 10 shops were completely destroyed by a fire outbreak at the Iya Maryam Adebara Complex in the Ogunpa Market area of Ibadan on Monday night.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr. Moroof Akinwande, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday in Ibadan.
According to Akinwande, the agency received a distress call at exactly 8:11p.m. on Monday from the Baale of Ogunpa, Alhaji Nurudeen Lawal, reporting the fire incident.
He said firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene and, on arrival, discovered that 10 shops out of several in the complex were already engulfed in flames.
“Our officers swiftly got into action and prevented the fire from spreading to other shops and nearby properties, while the Federal Fire Service also joined hands with us to extinguish the fire,” Akinwande said.
The fire services boss attributed the cause of the incident to a generator being fueled by one of the shop occupants.
He added that no casualty was recorded during the incident and commended officers of the Nigeria Police from the Iyaganku Police Headquarters for providing security and maintaining order at the scene.
