The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has resigned from her position, becoming the third cabinet member to step down following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for appointees seeking elective office in 2027 to vacate their posts.
Onyejeocha announced her resignation on Friday through a letter shared on her social media platforms, three days after the March 31 deadline set by the President.
However, she did not disclose the elective position she intends to contest.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I announce my resignation as Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment,” she wrote.
She expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and Nigerians for the opportunity to serve, describing her time in office as a privilege.
“This decision comes with profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the opportunity to serve Nigeria in his administration,” she stated, adding that her exit marks “the end of a significant chapter” in her public service journey.
The former minister also commended staff of the ministry for their dedication and contributions toward strengthening workers’ rights, improving workplace safety, and expanding employment opportunities across the country.
A former member of the House of Representatives, where she represented Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State from 2007 to 2023, Onyejeocha thanked her constituents for their continued support over the years.
“As one chapter closes, another opens. I remain committed to service, to progress, and to building the Nigeria we all deserve,” she added.
Her resignation follows similar moves by the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, who stepped down to pursue the Gombe State governorship, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, who also resigned to join the Bauchi State governorship race.
