As Nigeria joined the rest of the World to commentate the 2025 Universal Health Coverage Day, the FCT Administration through its Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS,) may have surpassed the annual Ministerial deliverables enrollment target of 25,0000 per annum of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration.

The Permanent Secretary, FCTA Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Baba Gana Adams dropped this hint at an event organized by the Secretariat to commentate the 2025 UHC Day in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme of this year’s UHC, ” Unaffordable Health Costs? We are Tired and Sick of it”, Dr. Adams said it speaks directly to the urgent need to make healthcare affordable accessible for all.

While stressing that quality health is not a privilege, but a right – he explained that, the theme highlights the struggles millions face in accessing healthcare, due to financial constraints,

Emphasized the need for governments to prioritize financial protection and equitable access to healthcare services.

” For us in the Federal Capital Territory administration (FCTA), Health & Environment Services Secretariat (HSES), it is a responsibility we take seriously, reaffirm our commitments towards achieving Health for all, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3.8)”, he hinted.

Furthermore, the Permanent
Secretary noted that, the FHIS, through the collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) was able to revalidate, enrol 69,512 new beneficiaries with valid NIN, out of which over 33,000 were new enrolments of vulnerable persons, surpassing the target for the year 2025 by over 8,000 additional enrolments as at November, 2025 which he said, is commendable by the FHIS.

He therefore commended the FHIS for its efforts in expanding health insurance enrollment, conducting continuous sensitization, prioritizing community-based interventions, and engaging with relevant stakeholders in actualizing the said vision.

“These initiatives brings us closer to our goal of ensuring every resident has reliable access to affordable healthcare. I am also excited to announce that this event is simultaneously happening in the six area councils of the FCT”.

” It is my honour to address you today as we commemorate the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day 2025, which is observed on December 12 annually, a day dedicated to reaffirming our collective commitment in ensuring that everyone can access quality healthcare without financial hardship”, Dr Adams opined.

He further stressed the essence of the UHC day; that it is to raise awareness about the importance of strong resilient health systems that provide quality healthcare without financial hardship.

“Today’s event, organised by the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, through the FCT Health Insurance Scheme (FHIS), demonstrates our commitment towards bringing healthcare directly to our communities. Our gathering here at Garki Market underscores our commitment to leaving none behind, most especially those in the informal sector.

“Markets such as this are vibrant economic hubs, yet the traders, artisans, and daily customers who keep them running, often have limited time or opportunity to seek routine medical care”, he added.

According to him, as an Administration, they remain fully committed towards strengthening the health system, expanding health insurance coverage, upgrading facilities, supporting their workforce, ensuring that essential services remain within reach of every resident.

The goal was to build a resilient health system which delivers quality care to everyone, everywhere, every time.

Adams, who called on the beneficiaries, particularly the traders, customers to fully utilize the free tests, engage with the health teams, and consider enrolling in the FCT Health Insurance Scheme, added that good health is the foundation for productivity and wellbeing.

Earlier, the Acting Director, FHIS, Dr Salamatu Belgore welcomed all the enrollees to the sensitization walk and Medical outreach FHIS organised .

She hinted that, “This exercise is not only happening here in Garki Market, that other colleagues of hers are in different motor-parks, engaging stakeholders in town hall meetings across the six area councils of the FCT for the same purpose.

“No one plans to fall ill. Illness often comes unannounced, when it does, the cost of care should not determine who lives well, who suffers. Health insurance is not a luxury; it is a shield against financial shock.

Through the FCT Health Insurance Scheme, traders, artisans, families, and vulnerable persons can access quality healthcare without selling goods, borrowing money, or delay in treatment.”

She revealed that the medical outreach and enrolment exercise scheduled was a deliberate efforts to build trust, correct misconceptions, to show that health insurance works.

Falgore, who commended all the FHIS staff for their dedication, other FCT staff, stakeholders, the media. Also appreciated the Management of the market, the leadership of the Success Traders Association of Garki International Market for patronizing them.

The Director reiterated that collaboration remains vital in achieving the FHIS shared goal of Universal Health Coverage in the Federal Capital Territory, where everyone – regardless of income or status, can access care without hardship.

The free medical outreach will focus on screening for some common non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, treatment of common/minor ailments to promote early detection, then access early intervention, as well and sensitization and enrolment in health insurance.2025 UHC DAY: FCTA EXCEEDS MINISTERIAL DELIVERABLES TARGET
