No fewer than 16 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Sokoto State have had their service year extended due to various acts of misconduct.
State Coordinator, Alhaji Usman Yaro made the disclosure on Friday during the passing-out ceremony of the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2 corps members held in Sokoto.
He stated that the sanctioned corps members were guilty of offences including abscondment, chronic absenteeism, and other violations of NYSC rules, emphasizing that the scheme maintains a zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline.
“Discipline remains a core value of the NYSC, while sanctions are necessary to maintain the integrity of the scheme, ensure corps members comply with laid down regulations,” Yaro said. “In this regard, no fewer than 16 will be punished with service year extension due to various offences committed while undergoing their service year.”
The coordinator also announced that two corps members received the prestigious Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar Award for their outstanding contributions towards improving the living standards of their host communities.
Yaro commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his continuous support to the scheme, particularly in ensuring timely payment of state allowances to corps members.
He also expressed gratitude to the Sultan of Sokoto for his steadfast backing of the NYSC, noting that it demonstrates a commitment to Nigerian youths.
He explained that corps members were deliberately posted to rural communities to promote grassroots development, in line with the scheme’s mandate and the development agenda of the present administration.
Many corps medical personnel were deployed to rural areas to address manpower gaps in the health sector, conducting medical outreaches that benefited thousands of residents across the state.

In addition, a large number of corps members were posted to schools as part of NYSC’s commitment to strengthening education in Sokoto State.
The coordinator highlighted support from the Bank of Industry and other partner institutions, which provided training and assistance on business development and entrepreneurship to corps members.
Yaro urged outgoing corps members to remain good ambassadors of the NYSC and to effectively apply the skills acquired through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme in their post-service lives.
